Pope Benedict while still Cardinal Ratzinger -- in full pontificals! Notice the exquisitely brocaded Roman chasuble placed over the dalmatic along with the lacey alb. Perhaps the best part is the jeweled mitre. But when all things are considered, dearest friends, it's the gloves...you gotta love the gloves. We pray Benedict will set the pace with liturgical fashions. This photo is evidence of marvelous things to come.

What's the symbolism of the gloves?

James-Charles Noonan, Jr., in his classic work, The Church Visible, explains, "Like the buskins and sandals, the gauntlets have not been abolished but are rarely seen nonetheless. Another term for the gauntlet is the pontifical glove, ws it is the glove worn by prelates when vested in pontificals. The gauntlet is a highly ornamented, richly embroidered glove worn by prelates of episcopal dignity when celebrating a Pontifical Mass. The color always has to match the liturgical color of the day. The embroidery is traditionally in gold thread. . . . Gauntlets, like the buskins, developed out of necessity to held keep the hands of the bishop warm during long ceremonies in damp, cold medieval cathedrals. The episcopal ring always has to be seen, so if the gauntlets are worn, the ring must be worn over the glove."

The short answer, though, is that they are just really cool.

Well, good that there are people who are thankful to you guys that you are commenting on the gloves of the Pope... Apart from the gloves, I admit that your blog is not at all bad. What beats me is that you find time to create a blog in the exam week -- procrastination or sense of mission? Anyhow, keep up the good work.

Darth,

Sense the Dark Side in you we do and ignore the importance of liturgical fashion we do not. Hence, very much for real we are--the force and the Vaticanisti are one, Sith Lord. The Vaticanisti think that most important it is to heighten the awareness of our readers, even about pontifical gauntlets.

But I really wish the "maniple" (abolished after Vatican II) would be revived...

Cardinal Sin of Manila wore "gauntlets" most of the time when His Eminence was still alive.

In fact, His Eminence wore gauntlets when His Eminence was buried last month.

Tobias is not a "Sissy Name". Just a Name that was "of its time" Usually a lad that is christened "Tobias" will end up being called "Toby". What's so wrong with that? Cheers and Peace Liam.
