More Bishop Gossip!

Yah, yah...reports surfaced this week that Cardinal McCarrick will be staying on as archbishop of Washington for a little while longer. Our sources told us back in July it looked like McCarrick's resignation would not be accepted this year. Bottomline: Pope Benedict has bigger fish to fry. Roman Curia reform and naming of new bishops for vacant sees takes priority. We do expect some movement by next summer, contrary to the 2 year timeframe published in the official Washington Archdiocese press release. Our sources tell us that the Vatican letter to McCarrick NEVER mentioned any length of time...yes, that's right...nowhere was there a peep of 2 years. Our best guess is that this was either McCarrick's personal interpretation (what's it with him and his interpretation of letters from Ratzinger?) or some wishful thinking on the part of some curial agent. We do wish His Eminence many years of good health.

On another note, before Archbishop Levada went to Rome last month, he vacationed in Maui with Bishop Tod Brown of Orange, CA. Rumor has it that Mahony was not to be found...unusual because they along with Neiderauer of Salt Lake City are old vacationing pals. So it was just the two of them...wonder if Levada was trying to close Brown on accepting San Fran? Brown has told numerous priests in Orange that he'd love to go to the City on the Bay. Some have even divulged they expect it.

Great insider information! Who is this Bishop Brown? What's his background and theological worldview? I keep seeing his name pop up. Is Orange diocese the same as Orange County, as in The O.C.?

They are, in fact, one in the same. We have no information on whether His Excellency knows the Cohens or the Newport Group, however.

He may want to consider getting to know the deep pockets even better than he already does, though, since he agreed to the largest sexual-abuse settlement to this point.

Does Brown prefer Sandy or Kirsten? Just joking. Yah, I remember Brown was the guy who nailed some sex abuse covenant to the door of his cathedral. What a load of bs. Ok guys, see I'm doing something for the sexually abused! It was a big pr stunt. Does he think he's Luther or something?

Finally, a posting I enjoy! I hate to let all you guys down, but I think Cardinal McCarrick and Tod Brown are perhaps the finest bishops in the American church today. They are so saturated with the spirit of Vatican2. And they both do yoga!

I suppose you also think Paul VI was the best pope of the century?

Brown is a vanilla amchurch bishop...and he doesn't know any latin....and he is...

He probably prefers Sandy...his acting ability, that is.

McCarrick will be around for years. I work for the USCCB and he'll be a voice in the church until his dying day. He's actually a really good guy who cares deeply for his flock.

What's up with those bishops vacationing together in Maui? Something very unseemly is going on.

What's unseemly about vacationing in Maui? We vacation there every July. Its so pleasant.

dear a. meyers,

before celebrating the vaticanisti for their "inside information," please recall that their previous inside scoop had mccarick's resignation being accepted. um, they just make this stuff up. they go by theodore herzl: if you will it, dude, it is no dream. i guess the vaticanisti will to power (unlike the papal will to power) isn't "infallible."

Yeah- what's up with that? Vaticanisti's previous posts had McCarrick's resignation being accepted in an "expedited" fashion!

The Vaticanisti and I, as far as I know, share the same theological and spiritual vision.

Couching this question, then, in language maent to convey the deepest respect and admiration, I ask. Since we all know and agree that clerics like Brown, Mahoney, Leveda, and such have a worldly vision of the church as being oriented to this-worldly fulfillment, psychological hapiness and social goals (not that they deny heaven, they just regard it as more or less inevitable for more or less everyone). Since we know none of these men consider that Christianity was instituted by God because this world is bloody serious and only the way of the Cross could succede in bringing a few to salvation. Since none of these men ever mention in their sermons or at any other time the two ways (heaven and hell), the need for total conversion of life and ascesis in order to attain salvation, or anything else that might actually provoke a revival or at least serious thought of sime kind in a moribund church. Given these and many other considerations suggesting that these men subscribe, to a man, to the bland spirituality of optimistic-humanistic-theism prevalent in our culture and promoted by Catholicism (all the while, of course, formally adhering to all the other dogmas). Why, may I ask, do we care which one of these bozos gets appointed to which bozo diocese? It all looks pretty much the same to me. Isn't there a better use of our time?

Ignore the picture.

Um - maybe because the flock need good shepherds?

Anonymous etteiram said...

My point was that none of them are or will be good shepherds. They all come out of the same ecclesial pool and share a common mentality. They take weekends away together, for goodness sake. The idea that any great differences in approach distinguish them is a fallacy. The vaticanisti know this; they idle away their days in vane speculation about episcopal appointments that make no difference.

But my meaning was clear based in the previous comment. Salvacion up to his usual sloppy reading.

Since Bishop Brown is my Bishop, I thought I would add my $.02.

Overall, I would give him an overall grade of "C". In reading the monthly diocean newspaper, his message is standard fare. I have been to two of his Masses and as a speaker he has a lot to be desired (read: horrible).

On the abuse issue, I would give him higher marks. Yes, his posting of his 7 thesis was a publicity stunt. Yet he tackled the problem head-on. Did he handle it perfectly? not at all. Was it expensive? yes. But you have to admire his "git er done" attitude, unlike some other Bishops.

I wouldn't mind his being transfered, but I don't think he is ready or able to handle S.F.

Tod Brown is my Bishop. I sincerely hope he goes to S.F. and we get someone orthodox.
He would fit in fine in the bay area.
I can't begin to tell you how liberal he is. If you want info on him go to www.thelaity.com. He is completely in the mold of the Cardinal to the north.
We had an indult mass at our parish and he canceled it when the pastor retired. Many of the parishioners left and went to an Independent chapel that is now thriving.

For the record I don't condone attending an independent chapel mass.

etteiram,

First of all, I am a she.

Second, I do read the postings and comment carefully. In fact I try to understand why a poster is angry or insulting. I took umbrage from your term 'bozo diocese'. I do realize that there are bishops who are not good shepherds. However, let us not forget the flock. The faithful need good shepherds. Where they'll come from is for God to decide.

Third, these bishops are ordained and it is sacrilegious to speak of them in a nasty way.

Let's continue to pray for our priests.

So Tod Brown and Bill Levada had a chinwag in HI without Roger... now isn't that interesting. Perhaps Bill really does know what will work best for SF after all! Could it be that Bill and no longer Roger is calling the shots in CA?

I seem to recall "Paul in SF" chiming in back in May in support of the appointment of Brown to SF.

Perhaps "Paul in SF" knows the mind of Bill a little better than the pundits of Vaticanisti. Perhaps "Paul in SF" knows a hell of alot more about what's going on in the SF archdiocese than any of the pundits ever will.

Wasn't it "Paul in SF" who wrote:

"Give us a bishop born and raised in SF who is familiar with the it's clergy, parishes and the administration of the archdiocese. A bishop who knows about our history by personal experience.
On consideration, the only qualified candidates for the job is Tod Brown in Orange. Unfortunately, Brown is wedded to Orange and it would be bad pastoral practice to move him up to SF. However, since Brown broke ranks with Levada and Mahoney by settling and turning over docs., he probably won't get the job anyway although SF would benefit enormously from from a pastor with his significant moral character."

Sounds rather prophetic in hindsight.

Bp. Brown would seem to me to be an atrocious choice for S.F.

S.F. needs someone who will be more proactive about doctrinally, theologically and liturgically cleaning up the see.

On the other hand, as much as it might tickle some of us, Fr. Fessio or Bp. Bruskewitz would probably not be the most prudent choice, as it would be a kind of "shock therapy."

However, someone with a character of "gentle orthodoxy" like, say, Bp. Vigneron might be a good fit. Or even a Bp. Olmsted. Although, I think Bp. Olmsted has much work yet to do in Phoenix, and would ideal for Los Angeles, eventually.

Fessio back to SF as AB? Get a grip, man. Not only would such an appointment lack prudence, he would be the laughingstock of his own clergy and would result in massive migration to the HI islands. SF clergy desire a bishop THEY can respect and live with.

Only Walsh or Brown will do.

If you send Bishop Brown to San Fran it gives a great opportunity to place an orthodox bishop in Orange. That would be a great match since OC is a conservative area. The parishes have become more liberal over the years but the right bishop could turn things around fast here. If you put an orthodox bishop in San Fran it would be entertaining but not as productive.

My sources tell me if Brown goes to San Fran, San Diego auxiliary bishop Sal Cordileone will takes Brown's spot in Orange. Yes, he is young and Orthodox. Great homilist. Great priest. Worked in Rome for a while. Great for Orange, but SD's loss. Check out my blog for more details.

Bp. Tod Brown is "mahony without
the charisma"......a singular cold-
fish sort of man. I think he's
trying to compensate for his deficicience as a human being by
cultivating the image of sharp administator. If he is a sharp admistrator....is that what SF needs in preference to a preacher,
man with pr skills, one who is a theologian??? If he is awarded SF
it will simply prove the adage: "it's not what you know, it's who you know".

When it was announced, in the Bosie
Cathedral, in 1989, that Bp. Tod Brown was being moved to Orange...
there was sustained applause, and
even whistling. Seldom if ever was a diocese so happy to get rid of an ordinary. I imagine the same feelings prevail in Orange now; how sad if such a man were
appointed to SF! Bp. Brown lacks even rudimentary pastoral and public relations skills.
what a shame

If Tod Brown goes to SF....it will
be proof that the process for
selecting bishops is totally flawed;
the man has nothing to recommend him.....neither piety nor intellect....no wit....no charisma...no "people skills" what-
ever. SF needs, deserves, a deeply
spiritual man...and one who can hold his own in intellectual jousting.

Appointed Bishop George Hugh Niederauer, bishop of Salt Lake City, as metropolitan archbishop of San Francisco (area 2,620, population 1,744,050, Catholics 425,210, priests 425, permanent deacons 62, religious 1,004), U.S.A. The archbishop-elect was born in Los Angeles, U.S.A. in 1936, he was ordained a priest in 1962 and consecrated a bishop in 1995.

And there you have it.

Happily, San Francisco "dodged the
bullet"...with the appointment of Bishop Niederauer rther than Bishop Brown".....not that I think
Niederauer is the best choice.
Unhappily, it still seems tht Mahony is Lord of the West. altho
now he must share his suzerainty with Levada!

Clearly, SF is still under the stranglehold of LA and Mahoney and Levada will continue to call the shots in Nor Cal.

That said, I was impressed by what appeared to be the new archbishop's thoughtful, careful and personable debut before the SF press corps on Thursday.

He appears to exhibit some outward sense of balance and people skills that were frightfully absent in his two immediate predecessors. Could it be that after almost 30 years, SF finally has an archbishop with a personality???

I wish him well and hope the SF clergy will lend their support during the next five years.
